Record Love

I love hurrying out of a sloppily parked car in a driveway and immediately scanning the garage sale for a dusty cardboard box, getting on my knees and flipping though dusty records. Garage sale shopping and thrift store shopping is practically a sport to me. However, I love going to (yes I'm doing a shout out) Dimple Records in Davis. I love knowing that I don't have to go leaving a little sad from a garage or an estate sale seeing only Bob Segar and Cat Stevens albums galore.
Today at Dimple, I  found The Supremes sing live at the Copa. The Copacobana was an extremely popular New York City night club established in the 40's. It was in this venue that The Supremes made their debut! I mean, how amazing is that. This just so happens to be that 1965 debut album. *_* SO HAPPY!

"Baby Love"  is number four, side one of this marvelous Motown record.

Ringaling ring

So it's about time I share my jewelry box. It's pretty much a mess but I love every piece I own. I love unique pieces that will either bring color to an outfit or match my outfit's mood. Textures and materials are what make any piece that I fancy earn a spot in my already crowded box.
Some my father has made for me such as this four sided die originally used for Dungeons and Dragons and now used as a conversation starter on my ring!
Some, like these two I bought from the UCSD bookstore are made up of small beads on metal projections giving it a  dynamic and kinetic composition (aka it's fun to see the little beads move and sparkle as my hand moves!)

Stay tuned until the next episode of the Sun Queen's jewelry box. (What will I pull out next? :P).

Who says you can't wear a dress to school?

"Picnic ready" by the SUN QUEEN (B.Rex) http://www.polyvore.com/year_freeform_fashion_day_11/set?id=37562778

Sometimes people ask me how I choose who to photograph. I realized after taking pictures of 100+ people that I am drawn to people who show creativity. I love it when people create a whole outfit accessories, hair etc. just like this fashionable lady.

The UCD student shown today has such an interesting style. She took an adorable beige dress covered with a Native American weave pattern dress and pulled it together with a simple brown belt (a must have fashion staple). Then, because the mornings here are chilly, she added a simple cardigan which is not only great practically, but fashionably as well. Her pink sandals are simply the cherry on top!

Posh Pooch

I went to a thrift store called Opportunity House in my hometown Vacaville, CA and found this little gem. The pink (1950's) poodle is definitely an inspiring find. It is such a refined little pooch with its fur trimmed at both the ankles and the "wrists". And with a little beret placed perfectly upon its head, how could I not buy it! However, my favorite part about it aside from being vintage and pretty,  is because with it's tongue out, it looks more silly than refined.

The posh pooch was such an inspiration for me that I bought Mabelline's perfect pastels "turquoise glass" eye-shadow and combined it with my L'oreal felt tip liquid eyeliner to create an oh. so. retro. look.

★★★★☆

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger was formed in 2008 by John Lennon's son Sean Lennon and his girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl. Their latest album "La Carotte Bleue" (the blue carrot :P) is not only on CD, but on vinyl as well.Their genre is officially "folk rock" and they do their genre justice. The new album and previous songs are as whimsical as The Beatles' (especially with their Sargent Peppers album) music but do add a strong guitar riff in now and then.

Interestingly enough, the real star in this duo is not Sean Lennon but Muhl. Muhl has such a sweet "echoey" voice that sounds like a soft whisper amplified. Muhl is also model and has posed for different brands such as Maybelline. Her model look therefore makes even the most ridiculous of outfits look amazing!

But with their unique style and music combined, they are incredibly interesting to hear and watch making perfectly interesting performers. And while they both have an un-orthodox sense of fashion, one thing I noticed about the both of them is that they love hats.

Rodarte Likes Art

Starry Night, 1889 by Vincent Van Gogh
If I had to choose a designer brand that I love and admire the most it would hands down be Rodarte. Those Mulleavy sisters never disappoint. Their just released Spring 2011 collection was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and was both refreshing and fun. It consists of sunflower patterns in petal-like cut dresses and various kinetic textures .

I'll take 100 ice cream scoops.

There is no denying that I am a bargain hunter. But tonight I was out-done. It was dollar scoop night and as I was happily waiting in line for my single scoop of Mississippi Mud Pie at Baskin Robbins in Davis, the customer at the register turned around with this GIGANTIC bowl of ice-cream with about (not 100 but it was a TON :P) 30 scoops plopped into it. My jaw dropped and I then ran out the door to steal a picture before he and his 15+ friends devoured it like a pack of animals! So fun!

When Ke$ha Comes to Town

Ke$ha along with LMFAO played at the UC Davis campus today on their "Get Sleazy" tour. As I walked around Davis this afternoon I was reminded of her presence when I saw many girls wearing outfits and makeup inspired by the artist. It was then I realized in order to "be like Kesha" all you have to do is wear:
1. glitter
2. short jean shorts
3. something animal print or something Native American inspired
4. have at least one of your items looked ripped/dirty
....and Presto! You are a bona fide Ke$ha look a-like.

THE GREAT CALIFORNIA PAINT OUT

The 10th annual Great California Paint out took place today in Davis, California. 100 artist set out some chairs, easels and stands and simply made art. Artists from all around the world including but not limited to Israel, Russia and France participated in the Davis event.

Evan Clayburg and his unofficially titled "the canvas and himself", 2011.

Evan Clayburg (shown above) was one of the most anticipated artists of the 100 that participated today. Clayburg is not only a visual artist but also a graphic designer and musician. Today he was literally a "living painting" allowing anyone to walk up to him and paint him wherever and however they pleased.
I loved his idea and how it got the community actively participating in the project so much that I asked him to paint me. Clayburg said the work he did on my hand was an "abstract piece" and laughed when he finished the masterpiece.

"Clayborg's "instant inspiration" on my hand

At the end of the day, the paintings were auctioned off at the Natsoulas Gallery on First Street. While Clayborg was a piece of art, he was not auctioned off. --Only his canvas was.

Eye Decal

Available at selected stores Christian Dior has launched a stick-on eye-liner called Velvet Eyes. This eye-catching embellishment is reusable and comes in four different styles. While $59 a set, this luxury is super tempting. The 60's wingtip eye is always a challenge to match exactly on both eyes and these provide the instant solution.

Hello World, I'm Your Wide Eyed Girl

Hello! My name is Bridgett Rex. This is my new blog titled The Sun Queen. The title is inspired by the famous French ruler King Louis XIV (a.k.a The Sun King) was known for being a spectacle. He is particularly known for his patronage of the arts and I find him such a funny, interesting character.

This blog will cover anything that I find particularly inspiring that crosses my path on the internet or on foot. I will remain the forever tourist wandering with eyes wide open and imagination running wild. No matter how long you have been in a place, there is always a new way of looking at it.

P.S. Everything can be viewed as a form of ever changing art.
 most dearly and sincerely,
